Our opinion: Planning a move

January 30, 2013

Remember stacking dominoes in curvy lines, then tipping one at one end to watch them all fall down in a pleasing way, a sort of brief stab at perpetual motion? Restructuring the Warren County School......

Grantland, not only has Sugar Grove talked of charter but while many in Sheffield are happy about the K-12, many are also upset about it and disagree with the closing of their elementary school. In fact, both AVES and SGES were issues discussed during public comment at the closing hearing.

Grantland, Hufnagel specifically told the board and public at the closing hearing that the administration would not bring this forward unless enrollment declines enough and was projecting 3 years from now. That was only 6 months ago. Enrollment has not changed significantly in 6 months. I can name 4 who have spoke about the issues at WAEC and concerns over its population, including class sizes. Many items on the agenda for the committee meeting were items that the board did not ask for but yet administration brought them forward. I'm not saying to never close South Street, I'm saying that I disagree with the timing. I disagree looking at this for solely monetary reasons instead of looking at the impact to the students.

Ther was already talk of a elementary charter school in Sugar Grove. It surfaced when the dicussion of moving the kids to Russell, and will increase once they relize it will be closing.

Limited: With the sixth graders going back to Beaty, there will be about 100 more kids at WAEC next year with k-1 there. This years K class is bigger than last years, 164 to 146 at South Street. There will always be reasons not to do something - sometimes in life you have to bite the bullet and go. I hate to assume things but bottom line - this has to pass the board by a 2/3rd vote. Hufnagel wouldn't have brought this up if the board wasn't behind him. Which four steps up and stops this?

Oldgran: You're right there has been nothing said against the other schools closing. This inane bickering about what ifs, what might happen when that comes up has to stop.

The TO would like you to believe that the board confirmed this but it was administration, not the board. Administration was reminded during the meeting that the board will make the final decision on this closure. This closure was not suppose to happen until the enrollment declined. The decline has not been significant enough for this to happen. Both schools are full. The class sizes are the largest in the district. WAEC has lunch, playground, overcrowding, safety, and parking/traffic issues. We should not be doing this next year. In a few years, yes. Right now the impacts to the children must be questioned.

I have heard no protests about closing Sugar Grove, Russell, Allegheny Valley, or Sheffield Elementary.

When it comes time to closing the out lying schools, the closing of South Street, along with all the other schools in Warren, will be a distant memory. The protest will start, how dare you pick on us and close our school, we will lose or identity.
