The circle of taxation: economy shrinks, gov't loses money, gov't raises taxes, causes economy to shrink more, gov't loses money, gov't raises taxes, economy shrinks some more............ and on and on and on. If our government would act in a more responsible manor and stop taxing it's citizens into poverty, imagine how much better off we all would be.

The numbers for the police and fire departments in Warren are staggering.Hard to beleive while making budget cuts these numbers could not be lowered.Guess to lower them, a effort would of had to be made.

First off, I don't want my taxes raised anymore than the next person. That being said, I don't know where you get your figures, but the $70k for patrolmen is incorrect. There may be an officer whose worked there for many years making that amount, but not all 7! And to say that our fire and police personnel provide little service is ridiculous. I doubt you would think that if it were your home on fire, your house broken into and possessions stolen, or some drugged up person on bath salts threatening you or someone else. They put their lives on the line for us everyday and if you think there aren't crazy people in this town capable of serious crimes, you're sadly mistaken. We've had murderers on the loose recently and the drug problem is out of control. Who do you think captures and keeps up safe from these people? I thik your real issue is with your discontent and hatred towards the police and pretty much every person who isn't you. Get help.

Bucky phillips was on the loose 7 years ago thats the extent of loose fugitives. Talk about blowing things out of proportion.How many times in the last 20 years has anyone been rescued after being held by crack heads or people under the influence of bath salts?I do not see the millon dollar fire dept rescuing people on a daily basis either. If having these high paid depts make you sleep a little better just say it.

These salaries sound way high for a small town of 9000. Sounds more in line of a city of 100,000 plus.Maybe they should consider combining some of these positions. Does this include the cost of benefits such as vacation, insurance, retirement, and holidays? That would add another 30-40 percent to the figures.

I recall the last time there was an ad in the paper for Warren Police Officers the SALARY was barely $40,000. A far cry from the 70+ this writer has presented. Then again...consider who the writer is.

A few weeks ago, 2 murderers were apprehended. I know of 5 people being arrested in the last 2 weeks high in bath salts and making threats. And last year a guy high on bath salts entered 1 of our schools to get his daughter making threats. The police blotter doesn't always list that they were high in drugs and lists it just as aggravated assault etc. It happens here a lot more than people are told about. Or the domestic disputes in the paper all the time or all the arrests for rape. That isn't protecting people and being an asset to the town? And yes, the starting salary is under $40k. Some people with an education and /or yrs if experience deserve decent wages for the time and effort to make a better life and living for themselves.

Remember the lady shot in Tidioute a few weeks ago? They searched the woods (near residential areas I may add) for the guy who shot her and was high on bath salts and after many hrs, they apprehended him. Another fugitive was loose as well and apprehended around the same time sbd this incident didnt make the paper. I have many more examples but its futile to list them.

Last one, don't forget the lady shot in north warren by a guy drugged up a few months. There's a need for our police and they do a great job. And I'd rather live in a community with a lower crime rate and murder rate than Erie or other bigger cities. 7 officers for 3 shifts is not too many and their salaries are justified in my eyes. So much goes on that doesn't make the paper here.

I was thinking more of the management types, not the officers. I certainly wouldn't want their job for any salary.Haveing to deal with the drunks and drug users. Gotta be a depressing job.

sickofit- hmmmm, it takes a lot of self control to respond to your post without insulting you but I'll try my best. Call it what you want but last time I knew, we lived in Warren? I can echo what Kelly14 said and can tell you that the $70k a year is wrong. But, I bet you don't have a problem not hearing gun shots every night; if you do, go live in Erie or Jamestown. I think you should be thankful for what you have and not complain but you may be one of the people that the Police deal with regularly so that may be why you post such rediculous language.

Why all the focus on the cops? Thats a thankless job that not many people are willing to give up having weekends and holidays off and not to mention dealing with the low life's of the city. Forget what the street officers make its no way near 70 grand.....thats more like state police money. Look at what the city manager is making or the assistant. Thats the real crime in this town.

Not so Nice ,We are talking about spending 1.8 millon on a police force for a small city,thats lost half of its population.Im not sure wheir you live, but if you have bullets going over your head its time to move.Kelly 14 Warren does not respond to Tidioute,or North Warren they have their own police and budgets .Im sure they are no way near what Warren Is spending.And to fill in the cracks and crevises there is always the state police.Im not sure why anyone that disagrees with you two are criminals?

Kelleys comments are quite accurate.Just because its not in the paper doesnt mean its not happening.Saltzers are a real problem, no drug I am aware of does what this does.****** is also very prevelant.Everything does not need spelled out for everybody.I think people would really be suprised to know the dynamics of the addiction problem in Warren and in every community. As for Taxes ,shrinking population means loss of services and then more taxes.Add 5000 more people to the population and there would be more revenue. Its not going to happen here.Enjoy and appreciate what we have this really is a great area. Most people here dont seem to realize what we have in Warren and surrounding counties.

As a retired (military) cop, I can tell you that most folks have no idea what goes on during a typical shift, because there is no TYPICAL shift. You would not believe the things that could make for a very good book. If I lived in Warren, I would be quite happy to have at least 7 patrolmen keeping the peace. A community to the east has only one. My limited interaction with "Warren's finest" tells me that they are a very professional, polite outfit. I'm sure that I would have a hard time exhibiting the restraint required to deal with the local populace. Whatever their pay, they earn it every day. God bless 'em. Do they have union-secured benefits??

Drive to Kane they have 2 outdated crusers.The posted speed limit is 25 from borough limit,to borough limit.The citizens of Kane decided that it was enough.They could not afford anymore.Heard of any armed stand offs and bullets flying over head their lately.Tidioute one older cruiser,sugar Grove none. Now count up Warrens 6 brand new cruisers,Sheriff with 8 new cruisers,atleast 10 more 2005 or newer.While constables do alot of the sheriffs work.I like the comment be thankful for what we got.We can not afford all this,I assume their is enough officers being employed to drive all these vehicles.When budget time comes all these must be considered in the base budget,any new items are the reason to raise taxes.Youngsville is another example of wasting taxpayer money,2 new cruisers for a town the size of Tidioute.

sickofit- Remember Officer Steve Jerman from Kane...yeah, shot and KILLED in the line of duty. Remember Randy Poole? Yeah, shot and killed and innocent woman 3 days before Christmas. You seem to have all the answers but the last shooting in Warren was in 2009 where a criminal was going to kill two more people and a Warren officer stopped him. As far as the cruisers, they are on a lease program that get renewed every few years so they're not being bought "out right". Like I said before, move to Jamestown or Erie and you can complain about their services...which I will say are extremely under funded also. A 1.8 Million dollar budget for a third class city Police Department of Warren's size is actually lower than the average across the state. Each paid service in a third class city this size should figure about 30% of each budget, Warren's police department is more around 25%....
