City says new better than old

Council decides to buy $213,292 street sweeper

January 28, 2013

Sometimes it makes more sense to bite the bullet and buy new rather than continue to repair the old. That’s the realization the City of Warren has come to regarding its 13-year-old street sweeper....

so instead of paying $20,000/yr we are going to spend 40,000/yr for five years and only hope the thing last for another five years after that. Doesn't sound like a good plan to me. Eventually enough parts will be fixed in the old sweeper that repair cost will come back down and yes eventually go back up again. But it sure beats paying double.

You have your numbers wrong. Instaed of $40,000 a year they will spend $50,000 a year. And if this company did such a great job in building fine equipment, why did they need to pay so much every year just to maintain it? Using the some math, you would be spending $6000 a year to repair a $30,000 car that was a 1999. One year spending that wouldn't be bad, but they spent that repeatedly. Which lends me to ask, poor equipment to start, not maintaing properly, or are the employees abusing it?

It sounds like a good decision to me. How many people are driving a 13 year old car that they use five days a week? With constant use even six months of the year I am sure the street brushes themselves wear out quickly and are not cheap to replace. Sweeping up antiskid, salt, and trash is hard on a piece of equipment. I think 13 years is the end of its useful life.

Sounds to me they raise our taxes and just can't wait to spend all that extra money! I sure wouldn't be buying the same make of it has cost that much to keep it going! I know if I buy a car and it spends more time in the shop then in my driveway I won't buy that make again. And yes I have had one and won't buy again that brand, I gave them 2 chances and both were in for repairs way too often.

If it is only used 6 months of the year wouldn't that actually make it only 6 1/2 years of use? Pretty sad when you look at it that way
