The number isn't the problem. The treatment available is the issue. Those countries have far superior mental health treatment options than the U.S.

Wow, is this twisting some data, however when one considers the source, Time. You may want to check some other sources for homicide rates. Consider Australia, the rate is 1.0/100,000 where the US is 4.8/100,000. Here is the interesting thing, long prior to the 1996 gun ban in Australia, there was a significant decline in homicide rates. Hmmmm, somehow the argument of gun bans are responsible for lower homicide rates, seems not to be very credible. Here is another, Russia, has a homicide rate of 10.2/100,000, and has limited ownership of firearms to the public, yet homicide rates remain relatively high compared to Western Europe and US and Canada. Here is another interesting one, Jamaica has 52.2/100,000 homicide rate, yet virtually no private ownership of firearms.... how about Mexico...Hmmm Wonder if possibly there are more underlying issues then the low hanging fruit of gun ownership in the US?

I feel that a large contributing factor to the gun homicide rate in the US is gang/crime related. Maybe we should see what we can do to curb gang and criminal activity?

Bruce, I agree with your comments.However The guns are not the only problem .I really believe everyone has the right to own a gun.The difference is an assult rifle is made to kill people. Maybe a $50K fine on anyone using a clip with over 10 Bullets should be looked at.People can keep the toy army gun they bought and be cool in thier own mind.Also Mental health is part of the problem.Look at both Australia and Canada thier people get help because they get treatment.Example: blue cross And try to get ins. blue shield has no such coverage in w pa for treatment of mental illness or Addiction. addiction.Im also tired of people saying they need them to" Take up armes against the Government".That seems to be a popular assertion.Been in this field for years.... It is a national disgrace! Send taht Baret wearing B-----d LaPerrie back to France~.

To Archaeo - good comments To Lifelong - The difference between myself and the NRA type adherents is exactly this. I'm willing to admit mental health counseling, video games, violence and ratings of films, etc. all should be a part of the discussion. The NRA adherents bury their head in the sand and won't admit that gun regulation, restrictions etc. are part of the puzzle as well. There is no need for any citizen to own assault type weapons. You want to shoot one, go to a range. The funny part about it is the NRA has no concern for most of its members. That's not where it's allegiance or interest rests. It rests with gun manufacturers. The fact of the matter is there are bad people throughout Europe, Japan, Canada, Australia etc. and their murder rates are a small percentage compared to ours. To try to ascribe specific character faults to U.S. Citizens is a lie and cop out.

People! Wake up! It's not the guns that are the problem. It's not mental health services. It's not movies or violent video games. It's that dad-gummed thing called THE U.S.CONSTITUTION! It's the cause of all our problems. Seize it, shred it. It's old and antiquated anyway and has no bearing on life today, anyway. Let's wake up and ALL get behind Mr Obama's plan to totally eliminate this evil document/philosophy. What were those founding fathers thinking, anyway, permitting private citizens to defend themselves. Idiots!

Perish the thought, Just Observing. The statistics quoted are not raw numbers they are per 100,000 people. Notice I said murder rates not murder numbers. Could the rates be what they are because we have 300 million plus guns in this Country?

300+ million guns, 300+ million people in the US. That's one gun per person! I feel like such a pig, depriving several others of their "fair share". Anyone who has more than ONE gun is over-armed, while others are deprived. Uh-oh. Don't let Mr O learn of this, or he'll start a new "weapon re-distribution" push (like wealth re-distribution) to achieve social justice. What's next?
