Check for summer squash every day
It’s late August and my summer squash plants are in hyper-drive. I’ve never been very successful growing zucchini until this year. When I planted seeds this spring, I anticipated that I’d get a few squash and then the vines would collapse with the usual bacterial wilt problems brought on by the striped cucumber beetle. This summer the beetle problems were minor and the squash loved the long hot days we experienced. Now I’ve got a permanent itchy rash from slipping my arms between the prickly stalks to slip patty pans and heirloom Italian zucchini out before they get too large. Neglect picking summer squash for a just a day or two and you will find mammoth shapes lurking amongst the huge leaves like sharks of the garden. Summer squash (also known as vegetable or Italian marrow), is a tender, warm-season vegetable that can be grown throughout the United States anytime during the warm, frost-free season.
