The sale of National City Corporation to PNC Financial Services Group will have some local impacts. In fact, Warren had some impact on the whole deal. The Federal Reserve approved the merger on Tuesday, and shareholders of both companies will make the final decision, possibly by the end of the year. Because of federal regulations regarding monopolies, the combined PNC will have to sell 61 branch offices, and one of those is the 315 Second Ave. location in Warren. “The Bank Holding Company (BHC) Act prohibits the board from approving a proposal that would result in a monopoly or would be in furtherance of an attempt to monopolize the business of banking in any relevant banking market,” the Fed’s report on the merger stated. “The BHC Act also prohibits the board from approving a bank acquisition that would substantially lessen competition in any relevant banking market...” In approving the deal, the Fed “considered the number of competitors that would remain in the banking markets”
