Check-In It Out
November 16, 2012 - Brian Collins
Why use social media?
Though it is a distracting waste of time for most people, there are others who have harnessed the power of platforms such as Twitter and Foursquare. As a former avid user of Foursquare, I have experienced the benefits for myself.
While Warren County develops slowly, the major cities around the world have experienced an extreme growth in social media users thanks to the implementation of "deals." Groupon Deals, Foursquare check-in specials, and Twitter secret phrases have taken viral advertising to another level.
By simply following a company on Twitter, users are given a secret phrase to whisper which allows them access to a trove of goodies. For instance, a free cupcake from the famous Sprinkles Cupcakes bakeries can be obtained by whispering a phrase such as "decadent" at one of their locations in Chicago, New York City, and other major cities. I know I could go for a free gourmet cupcake right about now.
It's not just the huge corporations that have taken advantage of this free advertising venue. Rosie's Tavern in Dunedin, Florida is a locally owned and operated business. Recently they ran a Facebook driven campaign where users checked-in to the business with their smartphones, tagged friends in a post that told them to come down and join them, and they were instantly rewarded by the owners with a buy one get one free special. In return, the owners experienced a significant growth in patrons.
Having been back in town for all of six weeks now, I have not yet had a chance to explore the local businesses to the fullest extent. However, I already notice a lack of window stickers offering such services. With more and more people switching to iPhones and Android powered smart phones, it makes me wonder "Why are we so behind?"
So far it looks like there are about 46 registered places in Warren. Of those 46, some overlap and some are even closed. If I'm not mistaken, I do believe there are more than 46 places of business... I'd love to hear from some businesses that are using Foursquare or Facebook - How is it working for you?
Let's go Warren. Let's get in this game. I want some BOGO deals right from my phone. Or a free cupcake...
