Beach Boys and clean desks

February 7, 2012 - Tom Schultz
I was recently told my blogs were very random. ... I failed to see the point in their remarks. Random blogs are designed to be just that, something which can be pointless yet entertaining. Plus, I have yet to hear any REAL complaints, so the blog will continue, at least for the time being.

I walked into a near-by grocery store this morning to grab a banana and a Buffalo news (yes, I still read those papers, too) when some Beach Boys song started playing over the radio. I enjoyed this. I have always been a Beach Boys fan, and to be honest, I always favored them over The Beatles, both of whom were tearing up the charts during the 1960s.

I think it's great to hear one of the Boys' songs every now and again. I realize how far music has come, for better or for worst. I then think about how much money those guys must get in royalty fees even to this day. Cha ching!

But perhaps I'm not very fair to The Beatles, which are generally regarded as the best band of all time. I don't know, I guess I prefer my music homegrown, right here in the States. Sorry Paul, my respect falls on Brian Wilson.

As I am typing this, I am noticing how clean fellow report Josh Cotton's desk is. I am using his computer because, quite frankly, mine has been sluggish lately. I don't blame the computer, however. It is used far more often than most in the newsroom. It is used for general use, layout, obits and more. I think perhaps the computer isn't happy with my choice of desktop wallpaper, either. Who doesn't love a grassy hill?

But back to Cotton's cleanliness. I have never seen such a spotless workplace. He has an organized calendar, pictures of his family and even some baseballs, even if I think baseball is a miserably boring sport. (just my opinion!) So kudos to Josh and his spot-on desk, which is ironic considering his desk is right in front of Brian Ferry, who is by far, a complete opposite.

Ferry is a good man, so I guess you can never judge a reporter by how he keeps his desk. I must say, though, that my desk gets just as bad sometimes. When things get going, it's hard to keep things organized. But just so you know what I am talking about, I have included what Mr. Ferry looks like while he is at his desk.

P.s. I did not tell him what i was doing when I said I was going to take his picture. Good man.

I must say this does not represent my desk in its normal state. The presence of two drinking vessels, two containers of drink additives, and one food container is pretty close. The rest, not so much.
