An Ode to the Owed

December 26, 2011 - Tom Schultz
Remember when you were younger and you got clothes for Christmas? We all did, and we all thought they were the worst gift. I mean, when you're that young, it's all about the toys. And don't get me started on how great toys are nowadays compared to when I was at that age. They have gotten far more advance, albeit far more expensive.

Back to the point.

I love getting clothes during the holidays. Clothes aren't cheap. They are too expensive, and my relatives have my style down, so I trust them and their judgement. I guess when you grow up, you think more economically. When I think about going out and buying a nice new sweater, I think to myself: "Can I get my parents to buy me this next Dec. 25?"

Yes I can.

And I do.

I think when we get older, we tend to think long term. When you're younger, it's all about what is in the moment. What's on TV NOW; what's for dinner TONIGHT; what day is it RIGHT THIS SECOND? When you're older, it's all about the future. What's on TV TOMORROW; what's for dinner NEXT WEEK; what day is it NEXT YEAR?

I cannot scientifically prove it, but with age comes wisdom. I think I saw it on a cartoon once, but I truly believe the older we get, the wiser we become. If not, we as a society would be doomed. We would just be a bunch of old people picking the Buffalo Bills to reach the playoffs. Get with the program! It's the Patriots, Packers and Steelers, people.

And even as an adult-in-training, I believe we grow up to become better people; the type who likes to receive those sweaters on Christmas and the type to pick the Bills even though chances are they'll fold mid-season. That's how we learn. We continue to grow and continue to train.

And by the way, I didn't get a sweater this year.

But I knew all along the Bills would crumble in the end, too. I'm from Buffalo, a sweater-wearing, Bills realist with a dry sense of humor. I have to say, though, I think Buffalo is owed one for these many years of suffering. Come on, Norwood! It was your only job.

True of Norwood, but that was only 1 of 4 consecutive Bowl appearances. They played as a team until the bowl and became a bunch of individuals. I was a fan for a short bit back late 70's - early 80's. San Fran got my attention and has held it since, even though the last decade or so was less than spectacular. I do tip my hat to you faithful Buffalo fans. They are the ones still in the stadium at the end of the game even though they lost by a lot. I've been at Wilson and saw more than half leave before the 4th when trailing by 20. No sweater here either.
