Like the Titanic

November 18, 2011 - Tom Schultz
Walking into work this morning it happened.

I knew it was only a matter of time, and with snow falling it became inevitable. I almost went down on a patch of ice. I did one of those things where you throw your arms up in the air in a last-ditch effort to balance out, and luckily for me it worked.

It was one of those moments where you quickly look around and make sure no one saw it. Luckily today, I stayed on my feet and no one was around.

I think my problem is that I am a natural born scuffer. Because of this, my soles on my shoes wear down over time, and right now I think it's time to get a new pair. With a lack of treads I become a walking disaster.

But I can laugh at myself for this because everyone at some point in time hits the ground. It's actually a natural part of life. Show me someone who hasn't lived in the north east and fell down in the winter, and I'll show you someone who is too proud to admit it.

Last year while still in school, it became a game to see how many people you could see falling down. On particularly bad snow days, you needed a calculator to keep up with the swan dives. Of course, the second you poke fun at someone else, you eventually become a casualty of your own game.

A lot of good men have been lost while playing.

Was it a horrible game? Yes, of course it was! But that's not the point.

In fact, there is no point to this. The fact that I got this much out of a near fall is beyond me. I apologize if I wasted a few moments of your time.

All I can say is stay on your feet this winter, but if you become a victim of ice and bad shoes, don't be afraid to laugh at yourself. And if someone laughs at you, just remember their time will come to do the same.
