The Trickle and Volleyblog

November 8, 2010 - Brian Ferry
Well done UPB Lady Panthers Volleyball! As a volleyball fan, there aren't that many places I can go in less than an hour to see collegiate volleyball. I've played a number of times at Pitt-Bradford and, in the last few years, have attended some of the Panthers matches. They play in a great facility. This year, for the first time, Pitt-Bradford won the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference volleyball championship. The finals were played on Saturday. We went, ran into a couple people we know, and watched some good ball. Laura Long played a significant role in the Panthers' victory, with solid serve receive and defense, setting when the setter was digging, and providing some timely offense. UPB won games 2, 3, and 4, and, if I'm not mistaken, Laura had the game winners in both the second and fourth. The one difficult part of the match for me, other than having to listen to SteveDan do the play-by-play (actually he did a fine job compared to most volleyball commentators I've heard over the years), was the match-up. I don't often root for Pitt. I root against Penn State even less. I certainly have never cheered for Pitt in a head-to-head confrontation with Penn State. I handled this by cheering for good volleyball and for Laura. I admit that, at least once, I subconsciously let out a Penn State! after hearing a We are! Penn State was well represented in the tournament. Altoona beat Behrend to reach the finals. The other final four team was Medaille. It so happens I know a number of volleyball players from there, as well. Good luck Panthers in the NCAA tournament.
