The Trickle - Knit in Public Day
June 21, 2010 - Brian Ferry
Knitting in Public
During a recent work-related walk along Market Street I was surprised to see a Knit in Public Day sign atop a car. I wasn't sure what to think. After about a week of (not very consistent) contemplation and a check to the WWKiP Web site, I've decided this is a cool idea. According to the Web site, knitting is too solitary. Neighbors, the writer says, could knit for lifetimes without realizing each other knits. So, there's a day when people with this shared interest get out, knit kit in tow, and do their thing outside the confines of their home. My chosen hobby doesn't much allow for staying inside and participating in a solitary fashion. But, that's part of the draw of volleyball, there are other people, some of them decent, interesting human beings, that I wouldn't meet except for that shared interest. So, I'm all for the knitters of the world uniting. Look for future editions of World Wide Knit in Public Day. It's held on a floating basis in the middle of June. And, if you prefer volleyball, or think you might prefer volleyball, I can probably find you a skill-level appropriate event.
