April 6, 2010 - Brian Ferry

Warren YMCA League

The playoffs of the Warren YMCA Volleyball leagues were last night. In the power league, my team (Gone Fishin') finished first in the regular season. We played a solid Cogito Ergo Boom team in the semis. We took two out of three from them. In the other semifinal, both WGH (second seed) and Reggie (third) were missing personnel. WGH (playing with five) won game 1. Reggie (playing without one of their regular guys (although it's not easy calling Emo 'regular')) finished by sweeping games two and three, setting up a Gone Fishin' v. Reggie final. I believe that matchup has happened in each of the past three season finales (although my team's name was different each season). We won in two. It was a good match, with both games going down to the wire.

It was a good result for team Gone. We had some new personnel - Ryan was solid all season, and Chelsey did a nice job coming in for Steph who did a nice job coming in for Erin (congratulations, Erin) who did a nice job. Ben, a sophomore in terms of the team, is still learning fast and performed admirably in his role as big man.

After the match, some of Reggie captain and WAHS Coach Mike Dolan's high school players (and friends) hung around to play. Mike and I played two against four. Although he's a bit older than I am, I'm pretty sure I was the only one on the team 'too old' to put up with much of the doubles scene.

After my teammate and one of the other team members left, I hung around for some hitting practice with the "kids." I broke into some old coaching habits. They seemed not to mind. Nice bunch.
