The Trickle - T.O. edition

March 11, 2009 - Brian Ferry

T.O. shuffles over

There are plenty of Buffalo Bills fans around. Some of them are talking T.O. I may not be a big Bills fan nor even a little bit of a T.O. fan, but that won't keep me from chiming in. Strangely, I think the Bills did a good thing. Owens, for all his faults, is a big time receiver. He's going to drop some balls and he's going to have serious personality conflicts and locker room issues, but he's also going to improve the offense. Even if he doesn't catch five touchdowns all season (I think he may get 15), defenses have to worry about him. No matter what he says in his own locker room, the other team worries about him on the field. That will give Lynch the opportunity to have a BIG season. The guy's a beast, just ask him. Back to T.O. His M.O. tends to give his new teams about one major-meltdown-free year. That means he's going to have a good season. Good for T.O. Good for Edwards. Good for Lynch. Good for the defense. Good for the team. I'm thinking T.O. may give Buffalo the boost it needs to see the playoffs.

The future of T.O.

I'd hate to call a 35-year-old old, but T.O. is no spring chicken in NFL terms. Still, he's loaded with talent and experience. Will the Bills keep him beyond the 2009 season? I think they will. Should they? No. Giving T.O. a chance isn't inherently terrible. Giving him time to settle in is. As long as he is in the league, he should be bounced around from team to team with receiving needs. So, without getting a look at this year's results, I'm thinking the Baltimore Ravens will wind up with T.O. when he is next available. Attitude problems that don't end up with the Raiders tend to make their way to Baltimore at some point. The Rams, Bucs and Dolphins also come to mind. It's too bad he would lose his get-out-of-attitude-free card if he went to the already receiver-stacked Cardinals. That would be something to see. I wonder if all these team speculations are just wishful thinking on my part because I don't especially like any of those teams. Maybe a team should look into getting T.O. and unretiring Brett Favre.
