Our Opinion: Call us naive
It has been suggested by some that politics will play a role in how quickly and decisively Congress responds to the massive flood disaster occurring now in Texas and Louisiana.
Democrat lawmakers may try to punish Texans for supporting President Donald Trump in the election last year, it has been speculated.
And New York and New England members of Congress, still smarting over delays in aiding Superstorm Sandy victims in 2012, may hold up relief for Texas and Louisiana, others say.
A handful of lawmakers indeed may play political games on the flood relief question. Sadly, some poisonous partisanship is present in Washington.
But — and call us naive, if you wish — we believe the overwhelming majority in Congress will act swiftly to help the flood victims. Some considerations still trump politics — and helping fellow Americans in time of trouble is one of them.
