Our Opinion: They are kids

What part of “the president’s young children are off-limits” do some entertainers not understand?

The often-maligned news media gets it, and has for many years. Presidents and their grown sons and daughters are fair targets for journalistic coverage.

But small children who happen to live in the White House deserve both privacy and sensitivity.

Katie Rich, formerly a writer for the “Saturday Night Live” television show, apparently doesn’t see it that way.

Several days ago, she tweeted a message about what she considered a joke about President Donald Trump’s son, Barron.

Little 10-year-old Barron  “will be this country’s first homeschool shooter,” Rich informed people.

“Saturday Night Live” officials suspended Rich indefinitely — and let us hope, permanently.

Presidents can and have provoked strong, often harsh, comments about their policies and behavior. In running for the highest office in the land, they invited criticism and forfeited any claim to privacy in most situations.

Their children didn’t.
