Our Opinion: The answer

The superintendent of schools does not want this decision made based on emotion.

The question:

Should the district eliminate the Youngsville football program?

She is exactly right — this decision should not be based on emotion, but, you have to understand, so many of these questions in recent memory have been answered based on emotion.

This question, specifically, has already been answered on emotion. Just check Facebook.

We get that parents, coaches, and some student-athletes, are emotionally-charged right now. “We are Eagles!”

But here’s the thing: Maybe Stewart wasn’t directing the question to parents of students at Youngsville High School, coaches at Youngsville, students or athletes at Youngsville, but rather to school district administrators and board members… to the people we have elected to, and who have been appointed to, make rational, well-thought-out decisions based on the information at hand. For the betterment of the entire district, all students involved, all taxpayers.

We have seen it first-hand in the past — a group of 30, 40, 100 adults and children at a school board meeting to show their disfavor, or to try to change the board’s collective decision.

But the board isn’t making a decision for just those 30 people.

We aren’t saying the board needs to protect us from ourselves… But someone’s already asked them to do that.
