Our Opinion: Candidacy in trouble

After Democrat voters caucused in Iowa Monday night, Hillary Clinton told reporters she breathed “a sigh of relief” at the results. She won, the Democrat contender for president noted.

But not by much. With final results in, Clinton had received 49.86 percent of votes in the Democrat caucuses. Her opponent, Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, netted 49.57. The remainder went to former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley, who dropped out of the race.

So yes, Clinton won – by about one-fourth of one percentage point.

That was not exactly a rousing vote of confidence from Iowa Democrats.

Some of it may have reflected differences about the issues. Clinton may be quite liberal, but Sanders is more so.

But much of the vote may also have been because of Clinton’s dishonesty and refusal while secretary of state to abide by the law on safeguarding national security secrets.

Clinton may have breathed a sigh of relief. But clearly, her candidacy is in trouble – and is no service to Democrat voters.
