Governor Tom Wolf has signed legislation cracking down on college fraternity hazing. Forced drinking of alcohol resulting in injury or death is now a felony.
Universities are now required to have strong policies against hazing. This is decades overdue. It probably would have prevented the death of Tim Piazza at Beta Theta Pi at Penn State.
My initiation hazing at Tau Kappa Epsilon (TEKE) at Penn State in 1962 was quite an ordeal but it did not involve forced drinking. Many other fraternities did do forced drinking.
Fraternity life has many good qualities, but dangerous hazing creates unnecessary risk.
Other states should follow suit and enact tough anti-hazing laws.
