Dear Editor,

I attended the PA DOT public forum Wednesday evening regarding the 2 proposed options for the intersection of Market Street/PA Ave. and Market Street/Water Street: replacing the traffic signal and increasing the turning radii or the installation of a roundabout. There were several concerns voiced about the roundup option. I requested that the presenter use the presentation slide of the proposed roundabout to illustrate how the roundabout would accomplish the explicit reasons why a roundabout is the better of the two options (1) improved safety and (2) smoother traffic flow while bearing in mind two caveats: (1) PA motorist law requires all motorists to yield the right of way to pedestrians at crosswalks and (2) motorist do not reliably yield the right of way to pedestrians in crosswalks without “Yield to Pedestrian Channeling Devices” (i.e. Liberty Street/Pennsylvania Ave intersection). This question was not answered. Perhaps a Times Observer reader can answer it for me.

Thank you,

Pauline Steinmeyer,
