Motorists, please!

Dear Editor,

My husband and I own a property with a backyard that faces Madison Ave. Every day we observe cars going over the posted speed limit of 25mph. With the lovely weather that has now arrived, it is upsetting to observe this most days, at every time of the day. What is more upsetting is the number of drivers that text while driving. With the increased number of pedestrians out and about now, especially children walking and playing, and adults jogging, pushing strollers, and tending lawns, it is upsetting to think that it would only take a couple of seconds for one of these distracted drivers to run off the street and strike one of these persons on the sidewalk, let alone the increased number of persons riding bikes on the street.

With all of the publicity these days about the danger of texting and driving, it is puzzling that such a high number of persons are still doing this. We cannot understand how someone is willing to take a chance like this, knowing the horror that could result from such a dangerous practice.

What was more alarming, however, is what took place early this morning. With a school bus stopped facing west on Madison, loading school students, a motorist driving east, proceeded to drive through the intersection, past the school bus, despite the lights and stop signs coming from the stopped bus. The bus driver laid on the horn, but by then, the driver was past the bus, and motoring down the street. What if a student was crossing the street, running to the stopped bus, trusting that traffic was stopped? How can a licensed driver do such a thing?

Please people, when you are driving a car or truck, remember the large, heavy, vehicle you are driving, and pay attention to what you are doing. Accidents happen when one does everything correctly. What would your life be like, if the ultimate horror happened, and while you were speeding, texting, or passing a stopped school bus, your vehicle hit someone, especially a child?

Warren
