Gettysburg

Dear Editor,

I greatly appreciated Josh Cotton’s moving description of the historical sentiment that engulfs Gettysburg (Diversions, March 3). Though I don’t do detailed research, I have read Stars In Their Courses and wept profoundly at the movie, Gettysburg, both gifts from my son’s theatrically-gifted minister father who resides there. I have also lost a cousin in Vietnam and attended the service of my son’s classmate who died in Afghanistan, each of which inspired me to pen a poem.

My introduction to the mystique of Gettysburg was pained due to personal circumstances, as my ex moved there with the wife he’d chosen over me, and our teenage son also felt the pain of abandonment – his more imagined than real. But the dust of disappointment settled over the years, as our new lives took shape. At high school graduation, he followed his father’s footsteps and made Gettysburg his domicile.

I, too, eventually remarried and my son became tour guide for our treks around the battlefield, beloved German shepherd in tow. The wax museum, authenticity of the Lincoln film delivering the Gettysburg Address, even a misty morning walk admist the solemness of cannons became my experience.

If you haven’t availed yourself of this multi-faceted trove of treasure, add it to your bucket list.

Sincerely,

Liz Farnsworth,

Kane-Warren
