Scouts’ honor

Dear Editor,

Way back in the 1950s I was a Boy Scout. Almost made Eagle. Was life rank. Needed 21 merit badges for Eagle. I had 18. Shoulda made it. Eagle Scout is a big deal. I have a lot of respect for Eagle Scouts. I don’t like to see them used for political purposes. President Trump gave a speech to 30,000 Scouts at the National Jamboree. He brought the Eagle Scouts from his cabinet, except Jeff Sessions. His speech was not about the values of scouting, it was a political speech. He bragged about his great victory. He attacked Hillary and Obama. Totally inappropriate. I still believe in the Scout Law and the Scout Oath. After 60 years, you forget stuff, but this is a memory. Scout Law: A scout is trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, reverent. Scout Oath: On my honor, I will do my best to do my duty to God and my country and to obey the Scout Law; to help other people at all times; to keep myself physically strong, metally awake and morally straight.

How well does Donald Trump live up to these standards? Think about it. Whether you like Obama or not he was a Boy Scout. Trump was not. I believe that Donald Trump would have been a much better person and a much better president if he had been a Boy Scout.

Warren
