Racism

Dear Editor,

Many thanks to the letter writers who dared to broach the subject of racism in the Reader’s Speak section last week.  President Obama’s election illustrated that, although we have made much progress, a virulent strain of this disease still infects our nation.  The Church identifies racism as a sin, even though the Church itself has been guilty and, in some cases, is still unwilling to admit guilt.  Progressive Evangelical pastor Jim Wallace of Sojourners Community in Washington, D.C., refers to it as America’s Original Sin.  Given our country’s history we have all been tarnished, to one degree or another.  Perhaps a national day of repentance would help us to heal.

“p1″>”The ultimate tragedy is not the oppression and cruelty by the bad people, but the silence over that by the good people.”  — Martin Luther King, Jr.  Let the people say Amen.

Sincerely,

Neil Himber
