Kousa Dogwood

Dear Editor,

After reading the article in the Times Observer about the possibility of cutting down the Kousa Dogwood tree next to the Spirdon and McKissock building downtown Warren, I thought I’d better comment.

I owned Cady’s Hallmark Shop which was next to this tree. During the years, hundreds of people would come in to tell me how beautiful the tree flowers were and the colors in fall. And ask, what kind of tree is it?

This tree won the city tree contest that a forest service employee and myself nominated. A plaque is there for coming in 1st place. This tree beautifully represents all 4 seasons. Spring flowers, lasting at least 6 weeks. Summer deep forest green leaves provide shade. Fall foliage turns brilliant reddish and presents red fruit, the birds love. Winter shows off the shape of arching branches, a haven for city birds, chirping so loudly, sometimes we could hear them inside the store.

Just do your construction around this tree. You will never find a more beautiful tree in any downtown. This tree is self maintained! It has survived while most all other city trees on Liberty Street have died, or are dying. Stop by this Kousa Dogwood in the spring. You will say to yourself that this tree should never be cut down, it would be a huge mistake!
