John J. Sprentz, 87, formerly of McKeesport, died Tuesday March 6, 2018 at Warren General Hospital after a brief illness.
John was born January 20, 1931 in Rilton, Pa., the son of Frank J. and Sarah Elizabeth Turnbull Sprentz.
John is survived by his loving wife of 62 years Anna Marie Farina Sprentz. Also surviving is daughter Joanne (Tom) Kovach of Cranberry Twp., sons Joe (Beth) Sprentz Warren, PA and James (Shana) Sprentz of Cranberry Twp. John adored his seven grandchildren: Kelly (Tim) Mediate, Sarah (Jason) Peterson, John (Courtney) Kovach, Andrew Sprentz, Anthony Sprentz, Isabella Sprentz and James Sprentz. His four great grandchildren, Degan and Logan Peterson, Sophia Mediate and Kace Kovach will miss “Big John”. Also surviving is his sister Patricia “Patsy” (John) Megliss of McKeesport and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, “Johnny” was preceded in death by two brothers Joseph (USAAF KIA 5/29/44) and Frank; seven sisters Helen Bohacik, Evelyn McAvoy, Mildred Huss, Anne Ellis, Betty Lou Sprentz, Ethel Sprentz and Julie Basista.
John was a veteran of the US Army 3rd Armored Division. His working career started at an early age and included Hubbard Coal Mine in Versailles, PA., 25 years as a press maintenance mechanic at Continental Can Company in West Mifflin. After his retirement from CCC he was a salesman with Catholic Cemeteries in Pittsburgh. John and Marie owned and operated Maria’s Pizza Shop on Grandview Avenue, McKeesport for several years.
John enjoyed Sunday family gatherings watching the Pittsburgh Steelers and eating Marie’s homemade spaghetti and meatballs. Before his move to Warren County, John was an active member of First Free Evangelical Church. His faith was inspiring and he spread love, kindness and joy to everyone he met.
A service celebrating John will be held at Trinity Episcopal Church, 444 Pa Ave West, Warren Pa on Friday March 16th at 5PM.
In lieu of flowers the family suggest donations to the Suits at Rouse Personal Care Home, Youngsville, PA.
