Gladys Chase

Gladys J. Chase, 78, of Sugar Grove, PA passed away unexpectedly at Warren General Hospital on Wednesday, December 6, 2017.

She was born February 21, 1938 in Lander, PA to Ralph Shaffer, Sr. and Mabel Arnold Shaffer. She attended Northern Area High School where she was a 1955 graduate. She married Alton G. Chase on March 24, 1956 in Lander, PA and is also formerly of Youngsville, PA.

She retired from Warren State Hospital dietary department and drove a school bus for ten years. She started decorating wedding cakes as a hobby in 1977 and turned this hobby into a 35 year catering business with her partner Fayth Coughlin, now known as Catering Plus. She continued working with her daughters right up till her death.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Sugar Grove, and a Girl Scout Leader for many years when her girls were young. She was former member of the Sugar Grove Fire Department Auxiliary and served as Treasurer. She enjoyed bowling and was secretary of the Sugar Grove bowling league. She loved knitting mittens and hats for children.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by her children Alton (Helene) Chase, Jr. of Sugar Grove, PA, Joy (David) Blair of St. Clairsville, OH, Deanna (Ken) Kuzminski, and Donna (Bryan) Clark of both of Sugar Grove, PA. She is also survived by her siblings Ralph (Janice) Shaffer, and Norman (Elsie) Shaffer both of Lander, PA. Stanley Shaffer of Downsville, NY, Frances Decker Shaffer of Russell, PA, Beryl (Dave) Miller of Jamestown, NY, Nancy Healey of Lander, PA, and Carol Davenport of Ashville, NY. Sisters-in-law, Rae Lindell and Peggy Chase. She is also survived by grandchildren Steven (Lee Ann) Blair, Mark (Nicole) Blair, Jody Blair, and Ben Blair, Nathan (Jennell) Chase, Sammi (Shawn) Lawson, and Simone Gibson, as well as 14 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was also survived by her extended family Fayth Coughlin, Evora Wagner, and Betty Harlow.

She was preceded in death by her daughter Sally Annette Chase in 2004, and her sisters Ella Joyce Peterson, Joanne Gallupo, Virginia Coughlin, and Marian Merch.

Friends will be received on Sunday December 10, 2017 at Sugar Grove United Methodist Church from 2 6 pm. A funeral service will be held there at 11 a.m. on Monday with the Rev. Sheila Auer, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow at the Lander Cemetery.
