Anna Frances Gates, 97, of Route 89, Corry, Pa., passed peacefully in her sleep at her home on Sunday, November 26, 2017.
Ann was born a coal miner’s daughter on April 12, 1920, in Grindstone, Pa., to her Austrian immigrant parents, Samuel and Amanda Cokomatch Salapek.
After a few years, the family bought a farm and settled in Warren, Pa., where Ann graduated form Starbrick School. She lived and worked in the Warren area before settling in Corry. For five years she was employed at Raymond’s (Associated Spring Barnes Group) before her marriage to Alfred Charles Gates on October 25, 1947.
Over the years, she enjoyed gardening with her husband, cooking, and baking for her large family. Anything related to nature was her passion. She loved the outdoors, wildflowers, and feeding her birds. Her love for the Lord was central to her long well-lived life.
In addition to her parents, Ann was preceded in death by her husband Alfred on September 14, 1979,; a son in infancy, Thomas Alfred Gates,; three sisters, Mary Seroka, Rose Freeborough and Catherine Freeborough,: five brothers, Steve, Joe, Tom, Frank and George Salapek.
Ann is survived by two daughters, Sheila Abbott and her husband Ted of Arden, N.C., and Charmaine Root and her husband Dick of Spartansburg, Pa.; four sons, Jerry Gates and his wife Barb of Corry, Pa., Garry Gates of Titusville, Pa., Alan Gates and his companion Faith Geist of Corry, Pa., and Sam Gates of Corry, Pa.; and a sister, Jane Conquer and her husband George “Red” of Warren, Pa.
Also surviving are fourteen grandchildren, twenty two great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Family and friends may call at the First United Methodist Church, 650 Worth Street, Corry, Pa., on Friday from 11 a.m. until the time of the funeral service there at 12 noon. Rev Jonathan Fehl will officiate.
Burial will be in St. Thomas Cemetery, Corry, Pa.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a one’s charity of ones choice.
