County mulls demolition bids

The Warren County Commissioners were encouraged by bids received in a project aimed at demolishing four blighted properties in Warren County.

The properties in question are 4582 Rt.6 in Sheffield, 3 Economy St. in Tidioute and 7 Exchange St. as well as 124 N. Main St. in Clarendon Borough.

A land trust owns the Sheffield property, the RDA owns the property in Tidioute and Clarendon Borough holds title to the two properties there.

Bids were opened on Monday for the demolition of the properties, which were bid together as one project. Federal Community Development Block Grant funds as well as Act 13 money – funds generated by fees on unconventional gas drilling – will be utilized to fund the project.

Commissioner Ben Kafferlin noted the total for each bid – $35,500 from Fox & Sons and $44,900 from Keith White Excavating.

Eggleston said that the $35,500 bid “is a great bid.”

County Grants Administrator Lorri Dunlap will review the bids and subsequently make a recommendation to the commissioners, who will formally select a contractor.

Kafferlin noted that the bids were “a little lower than I would have expected.”

“We’ve been trying to get these overall prices down,” Eggleston said, suggesting that bidding the four properties together has “definitely helped with the cost, overall.”
