Tidioute holds Firemen’s Festival in August

aPhoto submitted to the Times Observer A Tidioute Area Volunteer Fire Department ambulance sits at the fire department. The department is hosting the first Fireman’s festival on Saturday, Aug. 3 from noon to 6 p.m.

Serving the community is a family affair for Monica Morgan, of Tidioute. She is the fire department’s vice president. Her husband is the chief. Their daughter is an EMT.

The family and their fellow volunteers at the fire department wanted to open the doors to their home away from home to the community. “We wanted to spend a fun day together,” Morgan said.

“We usually only see people at meetings or when something unfortunate happens.”

The first Tidioute Area Volunteer Fire Department Fireman’s Festival will be held on Saturday, Aug. 3 from noon to 6 p.m. at the firehall, 228 Main St., Tidioute.

“This is our first festival to help celebrate our department, our members and to bring the public in to see what we do,” Morgan said.

“We’re a small department,” she said. She estimated they respond to approximately 300 calls per year, most of them ambulance calls.

Not all calls during the summer months come from local residents. “We have a lot of campers in our area in the summer,” she said. “This gives them a chance to meet us and learn what we do.”

Some of the activities planned include: games for kids and adults, cornhole, kids’ relay races, a Bounce House, relay races for firemen and emergency medical services, water battles with other fire departments, a softball game and a craft show.

There will also be free fingerprinting for kids, a chance to see the LifeFlight helicopter and free Hands-On CPR training.

Food and beverages will be available to purchase.

As a volunteer department, support from the community is essential. “Our bills are based on donations,” she said.

A tentative schedule of some of the day’s events, weather dependent, is as follows:

¯ All day — Games, Bounce House, raffles and rip tix

¯ 10 a.m. to 3 — Craft show in the social hall

¯ 12:30 p.m. — Water battles

¯ 1 — Cornhole

¯ 2 — EMS / Fireman relays

¯ 3 — Kids’ relay races

¯ 4:30 — Softball

¯ 5:30 — Raffle drawings
