57th Annual Sheffield Fireman’s Festival to begin August 11
The Sheffield Volunteer Fire Department will hold its 57th Annual Fireman’s Festival the week of August 11 to 17.
Expect some changes, but the goal of family fun remains.
The festival kicks off on Sunday, Aug. 11, with “the” chicken barbecue. The Sheffield Rod ‘N Gun Club chicken crew will prepare the chickens, and the SVFD Auxiliary cooks the rest of the meal. The dinner consists of a half chicken, baked potato, baked beans, macaroni salad, dinner roll, and a cupcake. The cost of each dinner is $10. You must have a ticket — available at Peterson Hardware, Repine’s, and from Melanie McMillen — to receive a dinner. Dinners are at noon and 3 p.m.
On Tuesday, Aug. 13, the carnival grounds open at 6 p.m. The midway (American Amusement Rentals returns) will open from 6 to 10 p.m. nightly from Tuesday to Friday and will open earlier on Saturday. Tuesday is also Kids’ Night starting at 6:30 p.m. in which there are added games for the kids to win prizes from sponsors who support this event each year.
On Wednesday and Friday, Aug. 14 and 16, there will be Ride-A-Rama from 6 to 10 p.m. Ride wristbands for this event are at a lower price this night. There will be no Bingo this year during the festival week.
On Thursday, Aug. 15, the Midway will be open from 6 to 10 p.m.
The third annual cornhole tournament will be on Friday this year, beginning at 6:15 p.m.
This year, the fireman’s water battle will be a night-time event on Friday on the lawn next to the fire hall. Registration for teams will be at 5:30 p.m. with the battle beginning at 6:30 p.m.
Saturday, Aug. 17, is the busiest day — with the return of music to the parade as well as a Small Drum Corps Association (SDCA) show following the parade. Parade time is 1 p.m.
If you have a float or a group that would like to participate in the parade, contact Lance Fiscus at 730-1011.
The SDCA show will be held at 3:30 p.m. across from the fire hall in front of the bleachers. No tickets are needed, but donations will be accepted during the performance.
At around 10:30 p.m. Saturday, fireworks will be presented by Starfire Corporation.
After the fireworks, there will be a grand prize fundraiser drawing. Tickets are $5 each. Fifth place wins $150, fourth place wins $250, third place wins $500, second place wins $1,000, and first place wins the grand prize of $2,500. Tickets are available at local businesses and from any fire department member.
A basket raffle which will be drawn earlier that night at 9 p.m. Stop and see the variety of baskets in the basket raffle tent on the carnival grounds next to the fireman’s booths. Money earned from this raffle will go to help defray the costs of the festival.
Festival proceeds benefit the SVFD to help pay bills. This is its largest fundraiser of the year.
