Lt. Gov. to listen on marijuana legalization

Lt. Gov. John Fetterman

Pennsylvania Lt. Gov. John Fetterman will visit Warren on Saturday, Feb. 16, as part of his state-wide marijuana legalization listening tour.

In January, Fetterman announced his intention to hold the state-wide tour to “gather input from Pennsylvanians about the possibility of legalizing recreational marijuana,” according to a Friday release from his office.

“Starting in mid-February, I will be traveling to all 67 counties to listen to everyone’s thoughts whether they agree with this initiative or have recommendations,” Fetterman said in a January release from Gov. Tom Wolf’s office. “We want to make sure all Pennsylvanians have a say.”

“John’s efforts will help ensure we are looking at this issue from all perspectives and from every corner of Pennsylvania,” Wolf said.

“Both Gov. Wolf and Lt. Gov. Fetterman believe it is time for Pennsylvania to take a serious and honest look at legalizing recreational marijuana,” according to the release from the governor’s office. “Medical marijuana has been legal in Pennsylvania since 2016 and Gov. Wolf stressed that any proposal for legalizing recreational marijuana would need to be implemented after the medical marijuana program is fully implemented.”

The first stops on the tour are near the middle of the state.

The Warren County stop will be at Warren Public Library in the Slater Room from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 16.

“Tour stops are open to the public,” according to Fetterman. “Those who are not able to attend or who are interested in remotely leaving a comment about legalizing recreational marijuana may submit comments via a webpage form that will be launched with the start of the tour.”

“More and more states are successfully implementing marijuana legalization, especially those surrounding Pennsylvania, and we should learn from their efforts and better understand the potential fiscal impacts of this reality before taking any collective action,” Wolf said.

A bill introduced into the state House by Rep. Jake Wheatley this month would legalize the use of marijuana for adults in the state and expunge criminal records of those convicted of marijuana violations.
