State sentence to man who assaulted pregnant woman

A Warren man was sentenced to state prison for assaulting his pregnant partner.

Adam J. Mintzer received a sentence of 12 months to 24 months from President Judge Gregory Hammond on Friday at the Warren County Courthouse.

Charges were filed against Mintzer by City of Warren police back in July, online court records show.

Records indicate that a charge of aggravated assault was withdrawn by the Commonwealth in August.

Mintzer entered a guilty plea to simple assault in September. In exchange for the plea, charges of strangulation – applying pressure to throat or neck and aggravated assault of an unborn child were not prosecuted.

His attorney, Chief Public Defender John Parroccini, told the court that Mintzer is awaiting state parole revocation.

District Attorney Rob Greene read from the affidavit, detailing the assault.

“Mr. Mintzer’s actions are deplorable,” he said.

Greene told the court that the victim does not want the charges prosecuted but that his office could not — due to the nature of the incident — proceed with the recommendation of the victim.

He asked for more time in state prison for Mintzer to “mend his ways.”

Hammond described the conduct as “disturbing, to say the least.”

He said that there are many reasons why victims of domestic violence might forgive their attacker, but cautioned that none of them are very good and wouldn’t be considered in factoring Mintzer’s sentence.

He then sentenced Mintzer to 12 to 24 months in a state correctional facility, $750 in fines and fees as well as a mental health evaluation to determine whether domestic violence, healthy relationships or anger management programming might be appropriate on a count of simple assault.
