DUI Task Force increasing patrols the rest of October

Drivers will be under increased scrutiny in the coming weeks.

“Warren County DUI Task Force will be participating in the state wide Impaired Driving Crackdown this month with extra DUI patrols on our highways, roadways and local streets,” Task Force Coordinator Todd Mineweaser said. “You may see a Youngsville, Warren or Conewango patrol car in areas like Sugar Grove, Sheffield, Russell or Tidioute. If so, they have county-wide jurisdiction while on a DUI patrol under the District Attorney’s DUI Task Force.”

The Pennsylvania DUI Association issued a press release stating that law enforcement throughout the state will be increasing patrols as well as other high-visibility details from Oct. 19 to 31. According to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration, reveals 10,497 fatal crashes involving alcohol impairment in 2016. According to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, 1,020 impaired driving crashes in the state in 2017 resulted in death or serious injury to one or more of the parties involved. And, said PennDOT, while the number of impaired driving fatalities has dropped statewide, the number of impaired driving incidents has increased. An increase of 1,196 impaired driving arrests in 2017 – a total of 53,578, was recorded from 2016. A total of 3,657 impaired driving arrests were made in Oct. of 2017 statewide, of which 26 were juvenile operators.

“Adults attending parties and other functions are reminded to plan for alternative means of transportation if they’re going to be drinking,” the release states.

“Our message is drive sober or risk the chance of getting pulled over and arrested,” Mineweaser said. “Then be thankful you were stopped by an officer before you injured or killed another human being.”

Pedestrians and those taking part in local trick-or-treat activities are advised to be visible with reflective clothing and sensible, safe costumes.
