Kane counterfeiter jailed, multiple felony charges

A Kane man is in jail after allegedly passing fake $100 bills.

That David Allen Wolfe, 23, of Kane, allegedly attempted to use when he bought a prepaid debit card at the Dollar General in Sheffield on Feb. 4 of this year.

According to the affidavit of probable cause, state police responded to the Dollar General on Crary Ave. in Sheffield for a reported counterfeit investigation on Feb. 5. Store managers there told police that Wolfe had paid for a prepaid debit card the day prior with three $100 bills that were later determined to be counterfeit. Upon further investigation, police said, it was discovered that Wolfe also passed “the same counterfeit bills the week prior” in Kane. Wolfe told police that he did not know the bills he was using were counterfeit.

Police spoke with Northwest Bank staff in Sheffield, who provided a copy of the bills and said that they “were known to be counterfeit due to them not having enough detail, the blue strip being different, and the bills not having a watermark face in them.

On July 24, the affidavit states, Pittsburgh-based Secret Service agent Andrea Griffin advised police that the bills were determined to be counterfeit.

Wolfe was charged on Monday, July 30, with three second-degree felony counts of forgery – unauthorized act in writing, and one third-degree felony count of theft by deception – false impression.

Wolfe was arraigned before District Justice Raymond Zydonick and remanded to the Warren County Jail on $20,000 unsecured bail, police said Tuesday.
