County doe licenses are selling out fast

Second bonus round begins August 20

Antlerless deer licenses for Warren County are going, going, gone.

Pennsylvania Game Commission doe license sales started June 18 for landowners, armed forces, and disabled veterans. Sales were opened up to all Pennsylvania residents on July 9.

There were initially 60,000 licenses — 1,000 more than last year — available for the Wildlife Management Units (WMU) that include portions of Warren County.

WMU 2F, which includes the portion of the county that is east of Route 62, was the first in the state to sell out, according to Treasurer Denny Munksgard. All 23,000 licenses were gone as of 9:30 a.m. on Monday, July 16 — the first day non-residents could apply.

As of late Wednesday morning, there were 2,054 left in WMU 1B, which includes the rest of Warren County.

“This is the first round of bonus tags,” Munksgard said.

Licenses that were not sold by the first Monday in August are opened up to those who already have one tag.

On Aug. 20, a second bonus round begins — meaning some hunters could have three antlerless deer tags this season. By then, the two local WMUs will be sold out.

Until Aug. 27, all applications for licenses must be received by mail. At that time, over-the-counter sales begin for the WMUs in the Pittsburgh and Philadelphia areas — 2B, 5C, and 5D.

State-wide over-the-counter sales begin on the first Monday in October.

The treasurer’s office is keeping up. “For the second year in a row, we’ve completed all of our tags before all the units sold out,” Munksgard said. “We have kept up with the incoming mail and issued the licenses before the WMUs sold out.”

Hunters will not be receiving their licenses for more than a month.

“On the second Monday in September — Sept. 10 — we mail out the regular issue and the first round of bonus,” he said.

The second bonus round tags will be mailed on Sept. 24.

Regionally on Wednesday, there were still more than 27,000 tags — out of 48,000 — available in WMU 1A (including Mercer, and portions of Crawford, Venango, and Butler counties), 11,000 of 63,000 in 2D (including portions of Venango, Clarion, and Jefferson counties; about 4,300 of 22,000 in 3A (including portions of McKean and Potter counties. WMU 2H — including portions of McKean, Elk, and Jefferson counties — was sold out.
