Sanford Homecoming set for Sunday

If you’re from the hamlet of Sanford in western Warren County, there is a homecoming scheduled for you.

Initially held in 1988 for the 150th anniversary of the settling of Sanford – and held every five years since – the 180th edition of the Sanford Homecoming is scheduled for Sunday, June 24.

The event will be held at Marcy White’s home, located at 3181 Sanford Road.

Sanford was first settled in 1838 by Samuel Ward Benedict Sanford.

According to J.S. Schenck’s 1887 History of Warren County, Sanford was “one of the most prominent of Eldred’s citizens, and now about the oldest, came here from New York State in 1838. He has always taken a most active interest in the affairs of the township and is worthy of the esteem which he is universally regarded.”

Schenck wrote that Sanford came to Eldred Township from Batavia, NY “… in the spring of 1838 with horse and wagon, reaching that township on the 6th of May. He immediately built a house on the site now covered by his present dwelling and began to clear his farm of seventy-six acres. During the summer he engaged in farming, and to some extent in lumbering, and in the following winter taught school in Garland, in Pittsfield Township.

“He has at all times been a prominent man in town affairs, having held all the offices which it is within the power of his townsmen to bestow….It was chiefly through efforts that the township was formed and the post-office established here.”

Those attending the 2018 edition of the Homecoming are asked to bring a dish to share for a picnic lunch at 1 p.m. Table service and beverages will be provided.

“Plan to meet and visit with old friends and families,” a notice for the event states. “Photo albums from past reunions and also old community pictures will be shared.”

At 4 p.m., an ‘Old Fashioned’ hymn sing will be held at the Sanford United Methodist Church.

Those coming are encouraged to share the upcoming event with friends and family.
