Students at St. Joseph Catholic School (from left) Cole Schwab, Liam Ferry, Wyatt Lewis, Ava Young, Evelyn Mechling, and Lexi Paris, “Celebrate Our Community” Tuesday during Catholic Schools Week. It was crazy socks day and students were encouraged to donate new socks for needy people in Warren County.

It’s Catholic Schools Week and students at St. Joseph Catholic School have already kicked off their celebration.

“St. Joseph Catholic School has much to celebrate during this year’s Catholic Schools Week,” Principal Nancy Warner said. “There are many benefits to Catholic Schools, not only to the children who attend them, but the community at large.”

“Students are taught that it is important to follow the example of Jesus Christ by living a life of service to others, leading others to know God, and learning all that they can in order to become successful servants of God.”

“It is estimated that Catholic schools save our nation’s taxpayers over $20 billion annually,” Warner said.

At an open house on Sunday, visitors saw improvements that resulted from a $330,000 DART Foundation grant. “The purchase of 50 new iPads and cart, 54 new computers, 12 new SmartTVs, five laptop computers, student desks, classroom rugs, and classroom bookshelves were made possible by this grant,” she said.

“Each day of the week has a unique theme,” Warner said. Sunday was “Celebrate Your Parish” day and Monday was “Celebrate Your Students” day.

In addition to being allowed to wear pajamas to school and having a pancake lunch, students were allowed to bring a pillow and blanket for use during a movie.

“Celebrate Your Community” was the theme on Tuesday, with students bringing in new socks to donate to people in need and being allowed to wear “crazy” socks at school.

City of Warren Mayor Maurice Cashman helped students “Celebrate Our Nation” on Wednesday by visiting classrooms and answering questions. Students sang “God Bless America” during Mass.

Thursday is “Celebrating Vocations” day. “Pastor Fr. Rick Tomasone will visit each classroom to discuss his journey to becoming a priest and answer student questions,” Warner said. “Students will make cards for people who have answered God’s call to religious life.”

“Friday is ‘Celebrating Our Faculty, Staff, and Volunteers’ day,” Warner said. “Students will wear their favorite team jersey and bring a can of soup in to be donated to local persons in need. Students, staff, and school volunteers will be treated to a contemporary Christian music concert in the morning and entertainment and games in the afternoon.”
