Some areas remain open at Chapman
Some recreational activities at Chapman State Park remain open despite renovation of the dam.
“The warming hut, sledding hill, and adjacent restrooms will remain open and lighted nightly until 8 p.m.,” Park Manager Tyson Martin said. “While the campground has closed for the season, hiking and cross-country skiing trails will remain open.”
“We have relocated the snowmobile loading and unloading lot to the mooring area parking lot near the warming hut for the season,” Martin said. “Allegheny National Forest’s snowmobile route Red 1 that transects the park will be accessible via the park’s Warming Hut Trail.”
The site preparations — including erosion and sedimentation controls, fencing, material staging, signage, coffer dam installation, and water diversion — are complete, Martin said.
“Completed construction items primarily include installation of 20-inch slip line pipe within the existing control tower outlet pipe, partial demolition of the control tower and downstream manhole, as well as full demolition of the outlet pipe endwall,” Martin said. Work on the manhole and control tower is next.
“The upgrades and repairs to the outlet works will increase the functionality of lake drawdown operations, simplify maintenance of the sluice gate vales, and extend the operational life of the lake drain system,” Ed Kaminski, project manager for Michael Baker International, the project engineering firm, said.
“After this is complete, work can commence on the earthen dam, spillways steps, and sediment removal,” Martin said.
