City working to fill soon-to-be vacant chief of police position

The City of Warren is well into the process of selecting the next chief of police.

The post will be vacant come January 1 as current Police Chief Raymond Zydonik swept both the Republican and Democratic tickets in last spring’s primary election for the office of magisterial district judge, which serves the city as well as Sheffield and Cherry Grove townships.

He received a majority of votes on the Republican side and a plurality on the Democratic ticket to ensure that he is the lone candidate on the ballot – for both parties – in next month’s general election.

To find the next chief, the City of Warren recruited some outside help.

“The Pa. Chiefs Association is handling this matter for the city,” City Manager Nancy Freenock said. “The position was posted on its job board for the month of September. Applications closed on September 30th.”

Freenock said that seven applications were received.

“The Chief’s Association will schedule the interviews, and the current Chief and I will conduct second interviews,” she added. “All interviews will be conducted on the same day in Warren.”

Just when the next chief might assume the post is still too early to determine.

“We do not have an official start date for the new Chief,” Freenock said. “Chief Zydonik has some vacation on the books that he would like to take prior to the end of the year, however. An official start date will be negotiated between the successful candidate and me.”
