BackPackular event Sept. 9 at AV

It’s back.

It’s backpacks.

It’s BackPackular.

Second Harvest Food Bank is hosting a backpack loading event in three shifts Saturday, Sept. 9 — 8 to 10 a.m., 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and 1 to 3 p.m. at Allegheny Valley Elementary School in Clarendon.

“For many Warren students, lunch provided by school on Friday is the last meal they will receive until they return for a school-provided breakfast on Monday,” Second Harvest Public Relations Coordinator Tori Pursell said. “To help tide these students over their weekends, the Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest Pennsylvania, in cooperation with the Warren County School District, administers the BackPack Program.”

The BackPack Program provides a bag of food containing breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snack items to 330 students on the free and reduced lunch program every Friday, Pursell said.

Second Harvest expects as many as 150 volunteers to participate in the BackPackular — loading 3,960 backpacks that will provide food for qualifying students “for the entire fall semester.”

Second Harvest is looking for volunteers to sign up for BackPackular. Registration is required. Those interested in signing up for a two-hour volunteer shift, or in more information about the BackPackular event, may contact Cindy Plymyer by calling (814) 459-3663, ext. 103, or by email at cplymyer@nwpafoodbank.org.

Volunteers are asked to donate $5 to “help support the Second Harvest Food Bank BackPack Program in Warren County,” according to the Second Harvest release.

“Feeding those in need — especially children — requires a community wide effort,” Second Harvest Executive Director Karen Seggi said. “BackPackular is a great opportunity for individuals, organizations and businesses to join together and invest their combined energy towards alleviating the hunger found in Warren classrooms.”
