5th grade moving from WAEC to Beaty this fall
Regardless of how the votes go at Friday’s special meeting of the school board, one change is going to happen next year.
Warren County School District’s central attendance area fifth graders will attend Beaty-Warren Middle School in the fall.
In the coming weeks, fourth and fifth graders at Warren Area Elementary Center will make visits to Beaty, according to Beaty Principal Ann Ryan. “This year’s fourth and fifth graders are visiting BWMS — fifth grade on Tuesday, June 6, and fourth grade on Wednesday, June 7,” she said. “While the students are here they’ll be introduced to the current sixth grade BWMS teachers, have a tour led by Student Council students or the Beaty Ambassadors. They will view a video produced by our current sixth graders to show the students about what they can expect at BWMS and attend a Math Carnival hosted by the sixth graders.”
The fifth grade at St. Joseph Catholic School will also tour the building on June 6.
“Any fourth or fifth grader who would attend BWMS is welcome” on the appropriate day, Ryan said.
Parents will get their chance after that.
“I’m planning a parent meeting at 5 p.m. Thursday, June 8, in the BWMS Powell Auditorium to answer parent questions,” Ryan said.
Adding a full grade to the school should open up some opportunities.
“I hope we will be able to offer some intramural or other activities for fifth and sixth grades,” Ryan said. “Having fifth grade here does give us a larger group of students to hopefully offer those activities.”
Exactly what offerings may be available will have to wait.
“I won’t know any details about those kinds of activities until the staff are here and we can plan for them,” she said.
There are more opportunities for new students to drop in and more familiar with the building.
“We will have free breakfast and lunch during the summer,” Ryan said. “Students are welcome to come in the front doors — off of Conewango Avenue — and go right into the cafeteria. Being familiar with the basic layout of the building will help students feel comfortable.
“Breakfast and lunch is served for anyone under the age of 18 — they do not need to be WCSD students,” she said. “Breakfast is served from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. and lunch is from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The cafeteria is closed July 3 through 7.”
“Meet the Teacher will be on Aug. 31 from 4 to 6 p.m.,” Ryan said. “Students will be able to get their schedule and walk around the building and meet teachers. They’ll also be assigned their locker so they can bring their notebooks and things and put them in their locker before the first day.”
