49th Four Flags ceremony set for Saturday at Crescent Park

Memorial Day, often seen as the start of summer, is a day to pause and remember those who have sacrificed for our country.

In Warren, it takes on an added meaning – a reminder of our heritage.

The 49th annual Four Flags ceremony is set for Saturday at the Heritage Point portion of Crescent Park.

The four flags represent the four powers who have controlled this area – the Seneca Nation of Indians, followed by the French, then the English before the formation of the United States.

Sponsored by the Four Flags Joint Service Committee, Saturday’s event will begin at 11 a.m. with music kicking off the event at 10:45.

The Elks Community Band, the Conewango Clippers and Mark Davis have all agreed to perform for the occasion.

Speakers will include Judi Wilson with the Daughters of the American Revolution and Alex Shreffler, a Leadership Warren County graduate who is involved with a group seeking to restore the Birdstone Monument at Crescent Park.

Boy Scout Troop 13 will serve as the color guard while Rev. Richard Tomasone of St. Joseph Catholic Church will provide the invocation.

The first event – the Three Flags Ceremony – was held in 1968 by the Kinzua Dam Vacation Bureau. The Seneca Nation of Indians flag was raised for the first time in 1986 and the following year, on the ceremony’s 20th anniversary, the Birdstone Monument, designed by Seneca artist Carson Waterman, was dedicated.
