Crew works to fix void under Liberty Street, but a portion will remain closed

City of Warren and Verizon officials talk about a void beneath Liberty Street on Tuesday as a crew from John Anderson Construction works to make some of the necessary repairs prior to filling the hole.

The void beneath Liberty Street in Warren was a T-shaped hole about four-feet tall, almost eight-feet long in each direction, about two feet below the surface of the street.

It was caused by a hole in a storm drain beneath the street that had been draining gravel for an unknown period of time, according to Department of Public Works Acting Superintendent Mike Reinke.

City officials were unaware of the void until recently.

“We’re trying to supply service to one of our customers at the (PNC) bank (building),” Verizon Local Manager Brad Peterson said. “We couldn’t push our fiber through. The conduit is damaged. We had to dig to repair it.”

Verizon found the void and notified the city.

A crew from John Anderson Construction handled the excavation and sewer repair.

Peterson said he expected Verizon’s portion of the job, repairing the conduit, would be completed in one day.

Reinke said the portion of Liberty Street at Second Avenue would be closed Wednesday, although he said it is possible one lane could remain open.

If all goes well, the work will be finished and the road reopened on Thursday, Reinke said.
