6 win big at DECA

Six Warren County Career Students participated in the DECA State Conference.

From Feb. 22 through the 24, Vanessa McNeal, Michal Shingler, Caitlin Reitz, Desiree Cann, Nicholas Giambrone, and Derick Nowacki competed in the event, which was held in Hersey, Pa. McNeal, Shingler, Reitz, and Cann placed in the top three in the district-wide DECA competition before advancing to states.

Students arrived in Hershey on Wednesday, Feb. 22 and took a 100 point multiple choice test in their events. On Thursday, Feb. 23, students participated in two role plays in their events, and were given real world situations for which they had to come up with solutions. Judges rated students’ responses to each situation. Awards were given on Friday, Feb. 24.

Vaness McNeal won one medal in Principles of Hospitality and Tourism. Michal Shingler won two medals in Retail Merchandising. Caitlin Reitz won three medals in Human Resources. Desiree Cann won one medal in Quick Serve Restauraunt Management. Nicholas Giambrone placed sixth in the state in Job Interview.

Categories of medals are broken down into high school and career center students and include medals for top three highest role play scores for role plays a and b, and top three highest multiple choice test scores.

Students also attended at least one workshop on a business or marketing topic, Marketing teacher and DECA Advisor Cathie Cummings said.
