Commissioners seek grant for work on ‘Historic’ courthouse

The Warren County Courthouse, on the National Register of Historic Places, is 129 years old.

And it is showing some of that age.

The roof is in need of repair.

As is the heating system.

The Warren County Commissioners are exploring state funding to help with that work.

The commissioners on Wednesday adopted a resolution authorizing an application that seeks $100,000 in grant funding from the Keystone Historic Preservation Construction Grant through the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission (PHMC).

County Planner Dan Glotz prepared the application for the commissioners.

“This is something Dan has been working on as part of our overall refurbishment of the courthouse,” Commissioner Jeff Eggleston said, noting the funds could be used for “a number of things.”

He suggested that a good portion of the funds, if obtained, would be used for work on the courthouse heating system and help the county “mitigate some of the costs to rebuilt… portions of the courthouse.”

According to the PHMC, the funding is available to non-profits and local governments “to support projects that rehabilitate, restore or preserve historic resources listed in or eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places.”

Work can include, among many things, “mechanical – plumbing, fire protection systems, heating, cooling and air distribution….”

The grant process is competitive and the county will learn the status of the application in July.
