Wolfgang pleads not guilty

A Warren man accused of attempted homicide could face over 50 years in prison if found guilty and sentenced to the maximum permissible penalty.

Keller Reid Wolfgang, 33, was in court for arraignment proceedings where he was formally advised of the charges against him from an Aug. 24 incident where he allegedly stabbed a woman “more than one time in the neck and back area” before fleeing the area and heading to Erie, where he was ultimately apprehended.

He entered a plea of not guilty on Thursday.

At arraignment, defendants are typically addressed alphabetically. Wolfgang was moved to near the top of the list on Thursday because, according to District Attorney Rob Greene, the Sheriff’s Office had expressed security concerns.

His attorney, Bernard T. Hessley, was initially not in court at the time of the hearing. Wolfgang was taken back to the Warren County Jail until Hessley arrived.

Wolfgang has been charged with aggravated assault, simple assault and recklessly endangering another person and criminal attempt – criminal homicide.

President Judge Maureen Skerda advised Wolfgang that the maximum penalty for the aggravated assault charge is 10 years and a $25,000 fine while the criminal attempt – criminal homicide comes with a 40-year maximum penalty, along with a $50,000 maximum fine.

In reading the charges to Wolfgang, Skerda said that he “did attempt to murder the victim” and was “watching as the victim was bleeding out.”

He remains held in the Warren County Jail on $250,000 bail, according to online court records.
