Chapman Lake opens to swimmers

Municipal pools may have closed this week but it’s not time to pack the swimsuits away just yet, especially if you’re a sandy-beach and lake-lover.

Chapman Lake opened to swimmers on Friday.

Swimming was the last lake-related activity to be restored since the completion of the dam rehabilitation project. The lake opened for boating in July and selective fishing earlier this month.

The rehabilitation project broke ground in September 2017. A ceremony was held on Aug. 15 to officially dedicate the dam and deem the project complete.

Chapman State Park Manager Tyson Martin said, “We’re very relieved that we were able to open it up for this weekend.”

Martin added that park staff is hopeful it will remain open through Labor Day Weekend.

The status of the beach rests on the results of weekly water samples. Weekly sampling has always been the protocol, according to Martin. As in the past “we have to take beach samples every week.”
