“A band ought to have a sound all of its own. It ought to have a personality.”

— Glenn Miller

In the Mood for big band music?

The Glenn Miller Orchestra will perform at Struthers Library Theatre at 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 28.

The event will feature five musicians on saxophone, four on trumpet, four on trombone, and one each on bass, piano, and drums, plus two vocalists performing famous Glenn Miller hits from an extensive list including: Moonlight Serenade, St. Louis Blues March, Little Brown Jug, Tuxedo Junction, A String of Pearls, In the Mood, Chattanooga Choo-Choo, Pennsylvania 6-5000, and Song of the Volga Boatmen.

Miller’s original band was a failure. “It was a total and absolute economic failure,” according to a release.

Then, in 1938, he tried again.

“The Glenn Miller Orchestra has been a ‘hit’ ever since,” according to a release.

Miller disbanded his organization at the height of its popularity to volunteer for the Army in 1942. He organized the Army Air Force Band.

Two years later, Miller disappeared after he took off in a single-engine plane from England heading to a performance in France.

The Miller Estate authorized the formation of a new Glenn Miller Orchestra in 1956 and that entity is the one that will play at the SLT — one of about 300 stops for the year.

“Just as it was in Glenn’s day, the Glenn Miller Orchestra today is still the most sought-after big band in the world,” according to the release.
