Kinzua Beach closed again, E. Coli testing
Kinzua Beach swim area is closed again.
The Allegheny National Forest announced Thursday evening that the swim area is closed due to E. coli in the water. The picnic area remains open.
“E. coli is a bacterium that comes from human or animal wastes (such as Canadian Geese),” according to the ANF release. “It also frequently occurs after periods of heavy rain when swimming areas are more likely to be flooded by runoff.”
The water at the beach is tested weekly during the summer. That testing is done by a certified lab.
The beach will reopen when the test results are within normal limits, according to the ANF.
Information about E. coli may be found at the recreational water illnesses section of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website — www.cdc.gov/healthywater/swimming/rwi/rwi-what.html.
